A temperance organization organized in the USA in 18701. It is one of the few later societies that did not come about due to a split from another society. It claims to be “the only strictly total abstinence order that has successfully combined its temperance principles with its beneficiary work”.
It has the usual three-part structure: a Supreme Council, Grand Councils covering a regions such as a state or province, and local Select Councils. Stevens reports five Grand Councils in Canada, seven in the USA, and one in Sweden (1899).
An 1881 initiation ritual is online2. Canadian manuals for the Select Degree, the Royal Degree (1889) and the 1904 constitution of the Dominion Council of Canada and Newfoundland are available online3.
There is a Select Council in Chatham in <1918>, a District Council in Toronto <1895-1903>, a
Grand Council of Ontario (Toronto 1895) and a Provincial Grand Council (Toronto 1921).
