Order of Scottish Clans

Back to Societies index

Sometimes called the Benevolent Order of Scottish Clans. Founded in the USA in 18781, it became the largest of the Scottish organizations in the USA. It provided health and life insurance, apparently the first to do so to Scots.

To join one had to be male, of Scottish descent, aged from 18 to 50.

The local unit is called a Clan and in 1897 there were 96 of them, seven being in Canada. There are Grand Clans at state or province level and over all a Royal Clan. In 1895 a female auxiliary was formed, the Daughters of Scotia which still exists2 but has no units in Canada. Apparently the Daughters were in Canada at one time.

The Order joined the Independent Order of Foresters in 1971 at which time it had 16 000 members.
