Canadian Order of Rechabites Temperance Friendly Society

Back to Societies index

The Independent Order of Rechabites (IOR) was founded in England in 1835 and is the oldest of the temperance benevolent societies.. At that time friendly societies tended to meet in pubs. The IOR was set up as a temperance organization.

The first US tent was established in 1842. It appears that there may have been two organizations in the US, the National Order of Independent Rechabites and the Encamped Knights of Rechab of North America with little being known of the latter. There was at least one Canadian tent by 1845.

Members were white, male, between 16 and 55, believed in a supreme being, and signed a pledge of total abstinence.

Their local unit is called a Tent. They have three degrees: Knight of Temperance, Knight of Fortitude and Covenanted Knight of Justice. There were tents for women and children although there was once a women’s organization called the United Daughters of Rechab.

The organization still exists but is not temperance in some parts of the world.
