The Hebrew Benevolent Society1 was formed in the USA in 1784. However it appears to have been confined to Charleston, South Carolina and certainly is today.
The Canadian HBS started in 1913 and appears now to be confined to Toronto1. There was a branch in St Catharines in 1916.
