Father Mathew Temperance Society

Back to Societies index

Named for Theobald Mathew, an Irish Catholic priest who, in Ireland in 1838, started a total abstinence society. It had enormous impact in Ireland. In 1842 and 1843 he went to Scotland and England. In 1849 he brought it to the USA where it also had great impact. In the USA there was an organization known as the Knights of Father Mathew but there is no record of that group in Ontario. A Father Mathew Total Abstinence Society was also formed in the USA, again no record of that name in Ontario.

There was a unit of the Father Mathew Temperance Society in Ottawa in 1901
