The Order of Chosen Friends was founded in the USA in 1879 to pay old age and disability benefits. It was the first organization to admit women equally with men. The group quickly ran into schisms, hiving off several groups by 1881. The US group disappeared in the early 1900s.
The Canadian Order of Chosen Friends was formed in Ontario in 1887 (although Stevens says 1891 and Axelrod says 1892) as an independent group although there was considerable litigation over the use of the name. In 1943 the Canadian Order of Chosen Friends became the Reliable Life Insurance Society with head office in Hamilton where it still is.
The Constitution and Bylaws for 1895 are available online. An acceptance certificate can be seen online.
The local units were known as Circles in the Order and Councils in the Canadian Order. Both the Canadian Order and the (US) Order had lodges in Ontario.
