Founded in the US in 1881 to provide life insurance. It merged with the Knights of Columbus in 1969.
It was open to Catholic men between 18 and 55. The structure is a Supreme Council, State Councils, then local units called Councils, which are tied to church congregations.
There was a branch in St Thomas in 1916-22.
